Swan Information

Our whole site is packed with swan information, but if you have questions we haven't answered we will try to point you to the right place to find the answers. (Of course, if you really want the latest word on Trumpeter Swans, we suggest you join the Society and receive our regular publications.)

Don't forget to check out the following parts of our web site:

Swan Links
We have a large and carefully gathered list of annotated swan links that should help you find almost everything about swans that is available online. Please be advised that we have included everything we feel would be of interest and has some merit. In doing so, we have include some links to some sites that contain poorly researched -- and in some cases wrong -- information. If you want to see what we consider the best, see below...
Swan Identification
For information on how to identify Trumpeter, Tundra, and Mute Swans.
Range Maps
Maps showing the range and distribution of swans in various areas.
Comprehensive Scientific Information
The most up to date and most complete single sources of scientific information for all three species of North American Swans are the species accounts from The Birds of North America. This series is jointly published by The Academy of Natural Sciences, and The American Ornithologists' Union. Your local library, university, or natural history organization may have a subscription to this series. Single copies of the species profiles for the Trumpeter Swan (No. 105), Tundra Swan (No. 89), and Mute Swan (No. 273) can be purchased from Buteo Books , 3130 Laurel Road, Shipman, VA 22971. 800-722-2460 or 434-263-8671. Cost is $7.50 each, plus shipping and handling. If you want, you can go straight to their online order form for this series.

General Scientific Information
We have tried to provide a good outline of what is available on our Swan Links page. We consider the following list to be the best resources:

The Trumpeter Swan(105 kb .pdf)
This 8 page document written in 1995 is an excellent general account of the Trumpeter Swan. This is publication G3647 of the University of Wisconsin - Extension, written by Sumner Matteson, Scott Craven and Donna Compton. The document is in Adobe Acrobat .pdf format and you may require the free Adobe Acrobat reader software to read it. This may be slightly inconvenient, but the .pdf format has the advantages of producing a very high quality screen and printed document and contains text and illustrations in a single file. The Society gratefully acknowledges the University of Wisconsin Extension Service for permission to post this document on our web site.

Trumpeter Swan Account from the Canadian Wildlife Service Hinterland Who's Who Series.
(see details on our Swan Links page).

Trumpeter Swan Account --Wisconsin Deptartment of Natural Resources
A detailed species account with lots of life history and breeding biology information, and lots of background information on the Wisconsin restoration program. (from our Swan Links page).

Trumpeter Swan Account - Alberta's Threatened Wildlife
(see details on our Swan Links page).

Videos

The Trumpeter Swan: A Restoration Project
The Wyoming Wetlands Society, in collaboration with filmmaker Diane Birdsall, has produced a 12-minute educational video, "The Trumpeter Swan: A Restoration Project". An introduction to the trumpeter and its wetland habitat, this film documents courtship, mating, display, tip feeding, paddle feeding, and foraging. It follows a pair of swans and their two cygnets from day one of hatching out through 16 weeks of age when they learn to fly. This inspirational video is suitable for adults and children, alike.

For more information about the project and the video, or if you would like to purchase the video, contact timelapseco@blissnet.com.

About The Wyoming Wetlands Society
The Wyoming Wetlands Society and The Trumpeter Swan Fund were formed to help restore a breeding and migrating population of trumpeter swans to Wyoming. The cooperative private and state program is a template for partnerships in species restoration efforts. Working with private landowners, the Society is identifying and enhancing wetlands to attract and host nesting trumpeters. Previously injured, rehabilitated swans are placed in suitable habitat with compatible mates and young from those pairs are used in restoration efforts throughout the state. Volunteer opportunities exist year-round to help with swan feeding and related necessary swan work.

Trumpeter Blues
This 1987 film focuses on the struggles of the Trumpeter Swan in the Yellowstone region. The cinematography is excellent. It is available from the main office or Trailwood Films. Color, running time 24 minutes.

Popular Literature
A. Lindsey Price's Swans of The World, In Nature, History, Myth and Art, and Dafila Scott's Swans are two excellent books on swans. Swans of The World is available from The Trumpeter Swan Society. Swans is now out of print. See our gift list for more details.
